Kashmir and Karachi - Thoughts upon returning from Neelum Valley

Welcome back readers and Eid Mubarak! I can't believe this is my second post in 2018 and more than half the year has flown by...I am extremely sorry for not being able to post anything (I was busy with stuff) but I'll try to post more regularly from now on. :) This post is just some reflections upon returning to my home-city Karachi after a trip to Sharda (Neelum Valley, Azad Kashmir). Kashmir is  such  a wonderful place..I was awed by the beauty and serenity of the atmosphere. We got ample opportunities to explore the place as well as to interact with the locals and, in short, had lots of fun. :) ----- I glance out of the cab’s windscreen. I squint. How come are we not surrounded by mountains? I wonder. Then it strikes me: of course. We are in Karachi, and there are no mountains in Karachi. As our cab hits the roads, we are surrounded by cars, people, traffic, lights (Karachi isn’t called the city of lights for no reason), billboards and visual pollution. Shop...

Eid-ul-Adha: A cow's account

My name is Rani. I was bought up and cared for at a farm in Gujranwala. In the farm, I had no worries, only pressure to produce more milk. The farmer, Fazal-din, was a kind-hearted person and treated all of us with love. My life was full of all sorts of luxuries and comforts a cow could have. I was allowed to stroll all over the farm, to graze in the lush green meadows and to eat as much grass as I wanted to. I could lie in the hot, Punjab sun for simply as long as I wanted to and only at night would the farmer collect all of us and lock us up in the barn. And none of us minded that, let me assure you.  The sight of the heavy padlock, and the sound of Fazal-din’s heavy snores- which echoed in the barn at night- gave us a deep sense of security. Those were the days, let me tell you. It was only in September that I entered the world outside the farm. And I discovered it was a greedy world. A world full of envy, jealousy, and deception.  The people here were hateful and des...

Beautiful Sounds

Some sounds are beautiful. They relax you and make you happy. My favorite sounds are natural sounds, especially that of birds chirping merrily at dawn and by sunset. They seem so calm, engaging, and peaceful!  Sometimes their chirping seems jolly while sometimes the birdsong feels sad. But it is always wonderful. When I hear a bird chirping, it piques my curiosity and interests me a lot. I just cannot resist the temptation to follow that sound and search for the little bird which is creating that sound. When a bird chirps, I feel it is like an invitation for me to explore the world. I also admire the soft rustling sound of the sea. The beautiful atmosphere and the quiet, hushed sound of the calm sea seem mysterious too. Yet it is soothing, a perfect lullaby that will make you sleep if you drop into a deck chair. The faint and delicate sound of the sea splashing on the golden sands seems meaningful, too. At times the sound seems inviting, while sometimes it feels unwelcoming. I...

The roads to Kashmir

Image
I road this short insight on the beautiful roads to Kashmir after a trip there. Here it is. Enjoy! The roads to Kashmir were really dangerous but touchingly beautiful, too.We saw loads of pine trees laden with pine cones. There were huge lakes of clear blue water and gushing steams that had started naturally between old rocks. We saw flocks of big, shaggy mountain goats and spotted cows grazing on the mountains. There were many types of trees and plants, too. We drove between huge green mountains, sometimes between clouds, fog, and rain. I washed my hands and face from a stream and looked for pine cones. On almost every dangerous turn we saw huge rocks that had slided off the mountains. They were dangerous roads that grew even more dangerous because of landsliding and traffic.   I felt like a tiny creature in a huge room. There was everything much greater than myself. I was awestruck by the beauty of the vast and beautiful landscape, and ultimately felt the greatness of th...

From flower to fruit: A presentation by me.

This is a presentation by me. It's about how flowers turn into fruits. Pictures are from my garden.

Nature Haiku

Here are two of my favorite Haiku(by me, of course!) on the topic of nature. In these Haiku, I've tried to capture the beauty of farmlands and Hilly areas. Though the beauty can never be captured,  because these places are far to beautiful and pleasant, I wrote these two remind you (and me) of how beautiful nature can be. Snowy Mountains Hills covered with snow, Pine trees that sway in the wind, As River flows by. Farm Lovely green meadows, Fields filled up with golden crops, Birds fly in the sky.

Finger and toe prints.

Image
Did you know that both your fingers and toes have prints on them? Each finger in this world has a different print, though there are four basic prints:                       Composite                                                                                     The whorl, the loop, the Arch, and the composite. The finger prints are very interesting-they're the Ayat-ul- llah! The Uniqueness of the fingerprints Recently, I found out, by staring at my hands and feet, that each finger, thumb, and toe, has a different pattern. Al you're fingers can't be the arch- they've got to be different! On one hand, I've got a pattern of the loop, the whorl, the loop, the whorl, and so on. Altogether, I've got 13 ...

Stars: and how they can be used for direction

Click the Green Flag to start. I made this project exclusively for Thinker's Club.  A few days ago,(the  day after it rained) when I went to the roof to get down the washing, I stared at the sky. It was so clear-as the clouds and pullotion had come down with the rain, I tried to remember  and spot any constellations in the sky- and I remembered, only one constellation with the shape- the Big Dipper. As I stared hard into the sky, I spotted it! It was quite far away(the pictures on the net are  probably close ups) but I saw it! I felt so pleased! IT felt wonderful to see it.
